Looking for a painting? Here are some things to consider.
Great pride: can be yours in the ownership of a fine painting that could last for generations in the family. Make it the first item in
your decorating budget.
In all we do, we communicate: We do things and build surroundings that we like, but most of us want to please others. Our talk, our walk, the clothes we wear and our choices in art work shape our persona. If the reaction of others is of concern to you, especially in the business world, think of your choices as a kind of ‘show business’. After all, in the past, art work was one of the few forms of entertainment. Visitors, who seem not to notice anything, subconsciously remember the painting or sculpture they saw at your place and identify you with it. As an example, most people enjoy seeing figures in paintings, whereas hanging a tasteful painting of a nude over the sofa can be a gamble in some circles. The nude, a sophisticated art form, will impact the mind forcing an impression about you. On the other hand, a routine “safe” landscape or a popular print can show a lack of imagination and little impact. It is not to say that we look for bizarre displays, but what we do is noticed more than we know. Yet, we must not forget that our selections should be an extension of ourselves.
The Artist: Serious collectors seek out an artist whose work appeals to them. It could be a past master or a contemporary. They may choose available things from a contemporary or commission a piece. The beautiful thing about ordering art is that the patron has some control over the subject matter, colors, size, medium, etc. Art buyers are thrilled in the role of the patron and derive satisfaction with their contribution and collaboration with the art. If this is something you would like to do, look for the artist with some credentials or whose work is in museums.
Color: If choosing art first is a very good idea, color is one of the best reasons to do so. Decorators will take the palette used in a great painting and follow the intense hues, the grays and neutral tones to form a color scheme. Color is a difficult subject. It might help to remember that paintings with warm colors advance toward us and those that cool colors recede and are sober and restful.
Size: There is a lot of optical illusion in the size of things. Use your eye rather than a tape measure to gage proportions.
Light and dark: You may like a large dark painting. Don’t hesitate to buy it for fear that it will appear too large. If your wall is dark or is in about the same shade range of darkness, it will not seem large. However, a large or small dark piece on a light wall will appear larger optically. The contrast is the key. It may interest you to know that the positioning of lights and darks in a painting are of paramount importance to the artist.
Storytellers: Paintings are wonderful story tellers especially those in realism with figures. What those figures are doing or about to do, lingers in our minds. Most adults will surely recollect from their childhood the painting that is etched on their minds. Perhaps it was a portrait of an ancestor, a sailing ship or a bouquet.
Sense of place: Know that paintings and prints, like little else, create a sense of place and make that painting on that wall, in that room, in that house a memorable spot. Remove the painting and its absence is clearly felt. The character of its environment is as if the entire setting is a painting or a painting within a painting.
Moods: Artists will do their best to convey a mood of one kind or another. Be aware of the emotion that paintings generate in a subliminal way and try to advance the mood the artist intended. Picture Wall Street on a Monday morning. There is commotion and people everywhere. Then, picture it on Sunday and the contrast is remarkable. There is no one about save perhaps a pigeon or two. In a room where quiet is desired, the Sunday scene is ideal, but it would be out of place in a doctor’s waiting room.
Home/Office: Take the warm domestic charm of home to the office. Good paintings can be displayed anywhere.
Try not to use popular or poorly made prints. Don't form wall groupings where the overall shape of the group shows little regard for the individual piece unless it is a matching set. Take care with abstract art, beautiful stuff, but most people don't understand it. Do we really need bubbles and swans in the bathroom or cartoons in the baby's room? A child will remember a good painting throughout his life. It is difficult to find good art and change isn’t necessarily the answer. Some staid law practice, in their efforts to appear modern, show a Motherwell that fills the bill, but a portrait of Abraham Lincoln will always work.

In case you didn't know:
Giclée Reproductions are quality prints that are generated directly from the original and faithfully digitally produced and printed singly on archival papers or canvas with permanent inks. The term, giclée comes from the French meaning a spray of paint.
Limited Editions are pencil signed by the artist in the lower margin on papers including the title and projected edition number. However, on canvas the signature and edition number are affixed in paint on the face without the title. Note that the edition in a certain dimension continues its numbering whether the art is reproduced on paper or canvas.
Note: We cannot guarantee the availability of certain edition numbers.
Prints may be ordered in custom sizes, but the exact size of the original may not be duplicated.
