"Maid in the Field"
The symbolism connected with the harvesting of the staff of life is always of interest to us. The harvest, the culmination of months of work, requires that all hands participate in this ageless gathering of grain. Here, the artist has elected to focus on one figure. The composition is reminiscent of Millet's "The Gleaners" that depicted poor peasant farm people that was an innovation and a social statement at the time. This oil painting is one of a pair, the other, "The Shepherdess," is also in this collection. The original canvas measures 18x24 inches dating to 2003 and was commissioned by Mrs. E. Giorgiadou.
