“I Zingarelli” (The Gypsies)
Gatto will move from the classic rendering of paintings to impressionism or even stylized representations. The color, values and movement, etc. of the subject matter are the considerations that the artist weighs for his interpretation – in this case, a broad impressionistic style emerged. The effect is right for this rollicking street scene wherein we see sidewalk performers, a tambourine, bright color and onlookers, including a sailor taking in the amusement. The original was painted ca 1982 and is an oil on board measuring 17½ x 30¼ and is in the artist’s private collection.
